Other Festivals
Don’t be fooled into thinking that Edinburgh only plays host to the best in comedy and theatre, no, no, no! Throughout the summer months there’s pretty much one big festival of delights after another.
OK so there’s Cannes and there’s Sundance but the Edinburgh Film Festival has it all, except maybe the guaranteed sunshine… But then who needs sunshine to appreciate the greatest films and their makers?
The title of ‘the home of jazz’ goes, of course, to New Orleans but, hosting its world famous jazz festival for the 29th year now, Edinburgh must surely be its favourite second home.
Rather like ‘war’, ‘art’ is an amazingly little word for something so hugely culturally significant. August in Edinburgh is the place to come and be humbled by some of the work that has changed lives for ever, or may be just about to…
It’s hard to describe the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, other than it should be on your list of things to do before you die and you’re far more likely to enjoy it than climbing Snowdon. This year is a 50-year centenary so it’ll be even more spectacular than ever.
The wellbeing of the planet and everybody on it is pretty much a new global religion and there’s something here for anyone who’s interested in changing our world for the better. For a start, a child in Malawi will be fed at school for a month for each event ticket sold.
An annual and mighty celebration of all things literary, the Edinburgh Book Festival features over 600 authors, from the pens of young pretenders in teenage fiction to the prize-winning stalwarts who’ve been tucking us up in bed for years.
Politics and the arts have been sisters since time immemorial, with the one providing a wealth of material for the other. So it’s only right that politics should feature in Edinburgh’s annual festival of the great and good in arts, music, theatre and literature.
For the best carnival atmosphere north of Notting Hill, bring the whole family to the Edinburgh Mela. And if you’ve got the stamina you can party for the whole week with an exciting mix of music, dance and theatre.
