Scramble around Scotland by Rail
A FAMOUS author of walking books has teamed up with a train
operating company to create a rambling guide especially for rail
passengers.
Mary Welsh, who is also a trained biologist, has created five
scenic walks around the borders and Scotland for First TransPennine
Express. It is the second in a series of guides showcasing
picturesque walks which start from a number of railway
stations.
The guide was created following the success of the first book
which focused on the Lake District and Cumbria and which was short
listed for two awards. Entitled 'Catch the train and go walking'
the booklet encourages people to combine train travel with
walking.
Mary Welsh, who is author of more than 40 walking books covering
England and Scotland said: "I greatly enjoyed preparing these walks
in the Borders and in Scotland. The ease of access by First
TransPennine Express to the centre of the glorious towns and cities
meant I arrived at the start of my rambles fresh and relaxed. I was
able to enjoy fully their architecture, antiquity and magic, with
more magic to come as I explored the lovely countryside all
around."
The guide contains five walks from railway stations in Penrith,
Carlisle, Lockerbie, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Passengers can choose
from either urban, woodland or country-based walks, all with superb
views.
Vernon Barker, managing director of First TransPennine Express,
said: "Since we started running services to Scotland in December
last year, the route has become increasingly popular. This walks
booklet is a great way for people who use this service to
experience some of the amazing scenery and culture in the Borders
and Scotland, directly from the train station."
The guides can be obtained at Tourist Information Centres or
stations on the First TransPennine Express network.
