Windermere Railway Station Short Listed for International Rail Award
WINDERMERE railway station has been short listed for an
international award.
The station, which is managed by First TransPennine Express, is
in the running for 'Best Small Station' in the International
Station Awards.
It is the second time a railway station in the Lake District has
been recognised in the competition, following on from the success
of Grange-over-Sands winning the award last year.
Judges from across Europe will visit the station on Thursday (18
September) to compare it against other short listed stations in the
competition. This includes stations in Holland, Northern Ireland,
Republic of Ireland and England.
Mick Elliot, station manager, said: "It is such an achievement
to be in the running for an international award. Windermere is a
great station and I think it has a strong chance of winning, I just
hope the judges think as much of it as I do."
The judges will be assessing the station on a range of points
including its facilities, cleanliness, friendliness of staff and
community involvement.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Belfast
on Thursday 13th November 2008.
