Everyone has a responsibility to leave the planet in as good a shape as is possible for future generations. We are increasingly seeing the effect of climate change on the world around us and it is up to all of us to take action to reduce the impact we have on our environment.
At First TransPennine Express we ensure that we manage our environmental impacts through our Environmental Management system and our Energy Management System that have been certified as meeting the ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 international standards respectively. These standards ensure that consideration of environmental issues is engrained into the way we operate.
FTPE have award winning Environmental initiatives. Most recently, we had success at the 2013 North of England Excellence Awards by winning the Sustainability award celebrating our work on the Green Grants initiative.
In 2008, we introduced the award winning and innovative EcoDrive competition which awards drivers for safely reducing fuel consumption. Since then, we’ve prevented 52,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (a significant amount) from being released into the atmosphere
The great news for us and our customers is that we are already in a really positive position because we provide the most sustainable form of transport compared to busses, cars and planes. The introduction of our new electric trains will reduce our emission even more. As the graphic here shows, you can go further for your carbon if you travel by train!
It is very important to aim for continual improvement in our environmental performance. As such, this year we have a number of objectives which will help us reduce our impact as a business and which will improve the environment for our colleagues and customers:
The EcoDrive Challenge
This year, as in previous years, we have set up a challenge with our train drivers to encourage fuel efficient driving across the network by using the specially designed Eco-Mode that has been developed for our fleet and by adopting fuel efficient driving techniques. Since April 2013 we have so far saved over 720,000 litres of fuel which has prevented the release of nearly 2,200 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent to the emissions from running 435 domestic homes for a whole year!

Local Environmental Improvement – The Green Grants Scheme
Our award winning Green Grants Scheme gives the opportunity for local community groups, charities and schools to complete their own environmental improvement projects by awarding grants of up to £2500. The project is run in partnership with the Forestry Commission, who help judge applications with the most deserving schemes being awarded a share of £20,000. The Scheme has been running since 2008 during which time we have donated over £150,000 to over 100 projects.
Applications can be submitted between 12th June and 30th October 2015, with the winning grants to be selected in November 2015. To apply, please download an application form here.
Managing our stations
FTPE have a number of Environmental representatives amongst the workforce around our network who are there to promote responsible environmental practices and to seek opportunities at their place of work to improve the way we work. To help with this, each station is provided with regular reports on their energy, waste and water consumption so that everyone can monitor and try to improve their performance.
