Young rail customers benefit from savings
A local train company is advising young rail passengers to invest in a railcard and save up to 50 per cent on the cost of their train travel.
First TransPennine Express (FTPE) is supporting the national '16-25 Railcard' which entitles holders to big savings when buying train tickets.
The standard discount for rail card holders is 33 per cent on routes across the country, but when advance purchase tickets are bought for services operated by FTPE through www.tpexpress.co.uk/students, customers can benefit from savings of 50 per cent. This is additional discount is only offered by FTPE.
Earlier this year FTPE ran a competition for '16-25 Railcard holders', where one lucky winner scooped a £1,000 towards clearing their overdraft. The competition attracted a high level of interest with a large volume of entrants.
Ian Giles (23), a Postgraduate student from Stockport, who is studying for an MSc in Translation Studies at the University of Edinburgh was the delighted winner of the competition and said,
"I use my Young Persons Railcard all the time as I travel between Stockport and Scotland.
"Studying for my masters is expensive but getting 50 per cent off my journeys to and from university is a real benefit.
"Even better still was winning the £1,000 from FTPE. I can't believe it, its great news for me and my bank manager and all down to a small initial investment."
There are currently around 1.5 million 16-25 Railcard holders in the country and eligible customers wishing to take advantage of cheaper train travel can buy a Railcard, which offers a standard 33% saving at www.railcard.co.uk.
Other Railcards available include Seniors, Disabled Passengers, Armed Forces and Friends and Family.
Holders of the Armed Forces Railcard also benefit from 50 per cent off FTPE's advance tickets when purchased through www.tpexpress.co.uk
Railcards can be purchased for just £28.00 a year and on average holders make an annual saving on train travel of £130.00.
Victoria Tomlinson, FTPE's Marketing Manager said,
"We know it is a difficult economic time and that is why we are supporting these Railcards.
"Travelling by train offers great value for money and with additional savings of up to 50 per cent for various groups, travelling across the north of England and into Scotland has never been as affordable.
"My advice would be for customers to visit www.railcard.co.uk and check whether they are eligible for cheaper train travel, there are some fantastic savings to be had."
