Tropical jungle, intensive mountain terrain and 110 degree heat....all on a mountain bike. This is the challenge one man is taking to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

Tony Tremayne, from Little Lever, Bolton, is cycling 500 km across Vietnam to help support The Christie in Manchester, just weeks before his 60th birthday.

Tony, who works as a Conductor Instructor for train company First TransPennine Express, will cycle from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and has trained for one year for the challenge. He has already raised in excess of £5000 and chose to collect money for The Christie after being a patient there when he battled Cancer 18 years ago.

He said: "I wanted to do something which would pay back the kindness the staff at The Christie showed me. They saved my life but other people I know have not been so lucky so I decided to do a challenge which would not only test myself but raise money for the hospital too."

No stranger to pushing himself to the limit, Tony travelled on a mountain bike from Vietnam to Cambodia in 2007 raising £4200 for the same charity. He sets off for this year's trek on 12 November and has been training in the Derbyshire hills.

The adventure is the same one which saw Top Gear presenters travel on motorcycles from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Tony will be doing the same trail in the opposite direction and on a mountain bike.

Joining eight other cyclists on the trek, Tony will travel 12 consecutive days to complete the route. He will drink at least 38 litres of water a day, could lose between 14 and 18 Ibs in weight by the end of the challenge and will cycle up mountains with 14km ascents.

He added: "This challenge will be more difficult than the one before as it is more mountainous terrain. I'm really excited about it though and feel like I'm living on adrenalin at the moment. Everyone has been really generous with their support and I can't wait to start."

The money Tony raises will go directly to help the Young Oncology Unit at The Christie, a specialist facility for young cancer patients aged 16 to 24.

Marco Giannini, Events Officer at The Christie, said: "We are very proud of Tony and what he is doing. He has worked very hard to train for this challenge and we wish him all the best of luck."
