Why take the train to Birchwood?
Built on the former site of a huge munitions factory, Birchwood didn't even exist until 1968! Named for the Birch forests that lie just to the east, it's a thoroughly modern town surrounded by pleasant countryside, so a day out offers a huge variety of things to see and do...
You can take a TransPennine Express train to Birchwood station, which is located right in the heart of the town centre; just around the corner, you'll find shops-a-plenty at the Birchwood Shopping Centre, plus a great selection of cafes and restaurants.
On the outskirts of the town there's the 500-acre Birchwood Forest Park, where bunkers from the old factory actually make up part of the landscape - it's a great place to explore, especially on a sunny day.
