Why Carlisle

Carlisle has a 2,000 year long history full of battles and conflict, desired as a military stronghold and fought over by everyone from the Saxons to the Vikings. The tempestuous past is still visible in the fiery red sandstone of the city walls and the imposing castle, but there are also more modern reasons to visit the city, like the lively nightlife and bustling shops. It's also a great base for exploring the North of the Lake District.

Hadrian's Wall National Trail

Oh, those Romans! Transport yourself back 2000 years along a ruggedly beautiful ancient frontier near Carlisle and wonder how they did it.

Carlisle Castle

If walls have ears you'd want to listen to every word this stubborn, forbidding, ancient old man of a castle has to say when you visit Carlisle.

Tullie House Museum and Arts

It's an over-used phrase, but there really is something for everyone here from Bronze Age artefacts, costumes, furniture and pottery, to insects and contemporary art.

Carlisle Cathedral

Yup. It's one of those awe-inspiring monuments to human faith with enough history embedded in its walls to make you feel very, very small indeed.
