Overview
Why Manchester Airport?
Manchester Airport is the busiest airport in
the country outside the London region in terms of passenger
numbers. Over 100 airlines offer direct flights to over 210
destinations worldwide. It offers non-stop scheduled flights to
destinations across Europe, North America, Africa, South Asia, the
Caribbean, the Middle East and the Far East.
The airport was officially opened on 25 June 1938, three years
after being commissioned. During the war, the RAF used the airport
for both operational flying and training. Over 60,000 paratroopers
were trained at Manchester Airport between June 1940 and March
1946.
After the war the airport grew
massively, and by 1958 the airport was handling 500,000
passengers annually, up significantly from the 4,000 passengers in
1938. Today around 19million passengers use the airport each
year.
In 1993 the train station opened in the heart of Manchester
airport.
With its first class shopping, relaxing hotels and stylish bars,
Manchester Airport is a hub of excitement and activity. Surrounded
by the beautiful Cheshire countryside and a stone's throw from the
vibrant city of Manchester, whether you're just passing through or
stopping over for a night or two, there's plenty to see and do.
