City Arts Centre Cafe

Based in local council buildings, there's been a cafe on this site for 30 years. Loads of tables means there's always room to enjoy their classic-with-a-twist bacon sandwich, served on warm ciabatta, or choose from the range of hot and cold specials and beautiful cakes including Florentine biscuits, Coffee Oaties and Iced Yum Yums.

The superb scrambled eggs on toast.

Liverpool

Leaf

This is a real 21st-century teashop and an absolute must-visit next time you're in Liverpool. The 100 varieties of loose-leaf tea offered is just the start, as Leaf hosts loads of events including vintage markets and craft fairs, as well as gigs that take place upstairs. The dynamite homemade menu offers everything from nibbles with a bottle of wine, to a full three course dinner. Their bacon sandwich is out of this world. A classic of the genre, it's served on crusty wholegrain granary bread (toasted if you like) and chock-full of delicious smoked bacon with ketchup on the side. Perfection!

Café 164

Situated in the same building as the Leeds Gallery, it's got lovely big windows, chunky leather sofas and quirky light-fittings. It all adds up to a refined but cosy mix-and-match. Their lovely bacon sandwich is more lunchy than breakfasty and comes on gorgeous herby focaccia, with Brie, avocado, tomato and lettuce. Proper yummy! Sandwiches, cakes and salads come from their sister shop Bakery 164, so freshness is guaranteed.

The Blue Pig

Situated in Manchester's Northern Quarter, The Blue Pig does things differently. It's got a real laid-back, Parisian style and offers delicious cocktails, beers and a healthy wine list. They also offer a killer bacon sandwich, sourced from a Yorkshire company also called The Blue Pig, on a chunky soft bap with a little salad and sauce on the side. There's also an à la carte menu that changes weekly and a vibe that's so relaxed, you could easily find yourself dozing in those deep leather chairs.
