Penrith, Cumbria with a population of 173,000 and is ripe with historic monuments and fantastic walks. The Penrith Castle, which still stands today, serves as a statement about the town's culture and history.
The famous poet William Wordsworth lived here where he attended the 'Dame Anne Birkett School'. Here is also a place where his granddad owned a house on Devonshire Street which has recently been converted into a shop.
Some of the sights in Penrith are in the running for some of the best in Cumbria and it's definitely this town's unique selling point. As well as visiting the castle you'll have to check out the caves called 'Lacey's Caves' located within the sandstone cliffs near the River Eden.
