Here are just some of the entertaining and historic highlights you can enjoy if you take a train to Wigan.
Museum of Wigan Life
Formerly known as The History Shop, the Museum of Wigan Life was recently refurbished thanks to a £1.9 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Delve into the history of the local area as far back as Roman times, and discover the people, places and events that have shaped the town. Open every day, expect Wednesday and Sunday; entry is free.
Trenchfield Mill Engine
This 2,500 house power mill steam engine is thought to be the world's largest. It was restored to its former glory in 2004, and watching the refurbished engine in action is an awesome experience. Free demonstrations take place every Sunday, and you can also find out more about the history of mill machinery in the AV show and engineer talks.
Haydock Park Racecourse
A few miles south of Wigan is Haydock Racecourse, where an exciting programme of both racing events, dinners and family-friendly fairs take place throughout the year. So whether you fancy a flutter, need an extra special night out or just want to pick up a unique gift, there's something for everyone.
