As a member of the TransPennine Express choir, Miranda knows a thing or two about the best Christmas carol services along our network. In this guest blog she recommends the top places for a festive sing along.
If there’s one way to get into the festive spirit this winter, it’s an evening of Christmas carols. There are so many services taking place over the festive period in the North and Scotland, and each of them are guaranteed to leave you with a warm glow. As a long-time member of the TransPennine Express choir and a seasoned carol singer, I would know.
About the TransPennine Express choir
I joined the TPE choir in 2013 to take part in the Halle Corporate Choir Competition in Manchester, competing alongside other local organisations in the North West – unfortunately we didn’t win, but we have our eyes on the prize this year! Altogether there are 25 of us, ranging from head office staff to conductors and frontline train employees.
Our favourite carols include Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland. Last year, we brightened up our passengers’ days by singing at Manchester Airport and Huddersfield, plus on the train journey in between. We certainly raised the Christmas spirit, and some money for Cash for Kids too. We are hoping to arrange some carol singing events at stations this year too – so keep your eyes peeled (and your ears perked!)

For carol concerts this festive season, I recommend the Halle Christmas carol events in Manchester. They are well worth attending, as they combine a seasonal selection of traditional carols with an amazing orchestra. It’s likely that the heart-warming Hallé Children’s Choir will steal the show. For more carol singing concerts in Manchester, head to Manchester Cathedral where you can drop in to sing some festive tunes, and stay as long as you like.
Further afield, Leeds Minister are holding a Christmas by Candlelight carolling concert with orchestral foursome G4, or get along to Leeds Cathedral for a free concert by local choirs.
York Minister’s Christmas Carol Concerts are stunning, and feature the York Minster Choir performing a mixture of classical and popular Christmas music, with the Yorkshire Volunteers Band leading the audience in Christmas carols. To add a little thrill to the evening, there’s also a special reading from a mystery celebrity.
For something a little different, take the train to Liverpool Cathedral to hear a modern take on a traditional service at the Electric Carols – and there’s even free mulled wine.
