A guide to getting to the airport by train

Get your holiday off to a traffic-free start and travel by train to your departure airport.

The TransPennine Express network can take you to a number of regional airports across the north of England and Scotland.

We have regular direct connections into Manchester Airport from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. Alternatively, our services combine with bus or tram services to take you to airports across our network including Newcastle Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

So, you can sit back and relax and start your holidays when you board the train.

Manchester Airport

With its first class shopping, relaxing hotels and stylish bars, a train to Manchester Airport gets you to a hub of excitement and activity or a gateway to the rest of the world.

We run regular services directly into Manchester Airport from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle, with calling points at Lancaster, Preston, Leeds and York.

The airport terminal buildings are just a short walk away.

Select Manchester Airport when you are buying your ticket for your direct service to the airport.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Liverpool South Parkway (sometimes shortened to Liverpool S Pway) is the station you'll need if you want to take the train to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The station is just 3 miles from the airport and the new 500 Airport Flyer bus takes you directly there. The bus is equipped with comfortable e-leather seating as well as free Wi-Fi and USB charging so you can stay connected on the go.

Travel to Liverpool John Lennon Airport via Liverpool South Parkway, and select an add on ticket for the 500 / 86A bus services. Remember to select this option when purchasing your train ticket online or just ask at TPE stations when purchasing your train ticket.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport connects the Leeds City Region with the world; flying to 75 direct destinations across 25 countries, alongside offering three hub services to hundreds more.

More than 3.5m customers fly through Leeds Bradford Airport each year and it has an an excellent on-time performance, delivering exceptional levels of service for business and leisure customers.

Flying Tiger run regular bus services from Leeds Station to Leeds Bradford Airport throughout the day, from early to late 7 days a week. There’s plenty of room for luggage and free Wi-Fi on board. With a bus stop just outside the train station you will arrive at the airport in under 30 minutes.

Just select Leeds Bradford Airport when buying your train tickets for a through ticket all the way to the airport.

Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport (GLA) is located 8 miles west of the city and serves most major international airlines. There are 28 daily services to London, direct flights to North America with United Airlines & US Airways, direct flights to Canada with Air Transat, direct flights to Dubai with Emirates, one-stop flights to North America with Icelandair

TransPennine Express run direct services to Glasgow Central from Manchester, calling at Preston, Lancaster and Oxenholme. On arrival into Glasgow take a connecting train to Paisley and then a connecting bus to the airport. Just select Glasgow Airport when buying your tickets to purchase a through ticket.

Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland’s busiest and the UK’s 6th busiest airport with over 333 flights per day carrying over 12m passengers a year.

TransPennine Express run direct services to Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket from Manchester calling at Preston, Lancaster and Oxenholme. On arrival into Edinburgh take a connecting tram to the airport, services run every 7 minutes and the journey is just over 40 minutes. Just remember to buy your tram ticket before you board.

Newcastle Airport

Newcastle International Airport is just 6m North West of the city and serves more than 80 direct destinations and connects across the world via a wider global network through London Heathrow, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam, Dublin, Copenhagen and Dubai.

TransPennine Express run hourly services into Newcastle from Liverpool calling at Manchester, Leeds, York and Durham. On arrival into Newcastle station just walk across the station to the Metro and take the Metro to the airport, the journey is just 25 minutes and services are every 12 minutes.

Just select Newcastle Airport as your destination when buying your ticket to purchase a through ticket.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport

More than 40 destinations are served by Doncaster Sheffield Airport with routes across Europe and onward connectivity to America, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Incumbent airlines include Flybe, Thomson and Wizz Air.

There is a direct shuttle bus from Doncaster interchange to the airport getting you there in just 22 minutes. TransPennine Express run hourly services into Doncaster from Sheffield, Cleethorpes and Manchester. Just add-on your bus ticket to the airport when purchasing your train ticket to Doncaster.
