Stockport, Manchester and Leeds are on TransPennine Express routes and offer marvellous days out exploring these places associated with amazing women whose histories are often hidden.
Take the train to Stockport and learn about life through the ages in Staircase House, find out what life in the 1700s was like for Elizabeth Raffald and visit the Hat Museum, perhaps Elizabeth wore a bonnet made in the Hat factory! Enjoy lunch in the Arden Arms that Elizabeth Raffald used to run.
Manchester of course is home to many amazing women, visit on a Thursday and learn about Emmeline Pankhurst in the Pankhurst Centre, find the blue plaque for Ellen Wilkinson and explore Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, all within walking distance of each other. It’s also worth heading to Victoria Baths to see where Sunni Lowry trained to swim the Channel.
