While you may not be able to eat meals out with all your friends and family like before, you can still show support for your local restaurants (and treat yourself at the same time) with a delicious takeaway.
Whether you live in the heart of Cumbria in Carlisle or on the east coast in Scarborough, here’s just a handful of mouth-watering takeout options to try at some of the key stops along the TransPennine Express network.
Despite being well-known for its pubs, York also has a hefty number of brilliant takeaway venues (with some opening up for table service again). Whether you fancy food from a far-flung destination or traditional fish and chips, here’s where to go for great takeout food in this historic city:
Bamboo Thai
Are you a green curry person or do you prefer a steaming bowl of spicy noodles? Either way you’ll be very satisfied when you grab a takeaway at Bamboo Thai. The venue is located on Hull Road and they serve up all your classic Thai dishes full of fragrant flavours – think yellow curry, coconut rice and sweet and sour stir fries. There are even several vegan options on the menu if you follow a plant-based diet, and if you would rather eat in, they are open for bookings.
Middle Feast
Have a craving for a shawarma wrap? Middle Feast is the place to order from. Usually a dine-in venue, the Middle Eastern restaurant has made the switch to delivery so you can enjoy all of their incredible dishes from your own home. Perfect for dinner or lunch, choose from lamb or chicken shawarma wraps or keep it meat-free with a falafel or halloumi alternative.
The Sea Catcher
And if you fancy some fish and chips in York, it’s all about the The Sea Catcher. Rated as 5/5 on TripAdvisor, this independent York chippie serves up freshly caught, beautifully flaky battered fish with mountains of perfectly cooked chips. The scampi is also very moreish, plus you can get a discount if you’re a student.
Fish and chips are a natural contender for a takeaway in this historic seaside town. You’ll also be able to enjoy the scents of delicious Indian cuisine. Here’s our top picks:
Nishat Spice
Whether you fancy a knock-your-socks-off Balti or a mild and creamy Korma, Nishat Spice definitely won’t disappoint. Widely considered one of the best Indian takeaways in Scarborough, they have a moreish menu of fragrant meat, seafood and veggie curries perfect for your Friday night takeaway fix. Nishat Spice also offer a non-contact delivery service if you’re shielding or self-isolating, and if you'd rather eat in, they are open for bookings.
North Bay Fisheries
Being so close to the sea makes fish and chips a no-brainer in Scarborough. Grab a takeaway at North Bay Fisheries, an award-winning takeout shop on Columbus Ravine. Huge portions and freshly caught cod and haddock make for a really tasty fish supper! Take your order to another level with some of the venue’s awesome sides, from classic mushy peas to Pukka pies and battered sausages. Yum!
The capital of Cumbria is awash with takeaway joints which are bound to get your tastebuds tingling. Many of them are wonderful independent businesses which you can easily support by trying them out next time you fancy a break from cooking. Here’s the pick of the bunch:
Happy Garden
If Chinese is your usual takeout food, Happy Garden on Portland Place is a great option. They’re one of the highest rated takeaway venues in Carlisle and have a huge menu of classic Chinese dishes. Savour the Special Chow Mein or choose from a whole range of flavourful meat and veggie dishes which can be paired up with plain or egg-fried rice.
Bluerare
Really missing tucking into the occasional roast dinner at your local pub? Bluerare is here to fill that void. Normally a dine-in restaurant on Carleton Road, they’re currently offering delivery roast dinner packages complete with beef, gammon or chicken served with heaps of roasted veg and lashings of gravy. Not feeling a full-on roast? Bluerare also has things like pasta, veggie chilli and even sirloin steak on their takeaway menu.
Live in Teesside? You’ll find no shortage of fantastic takeout options in and around Middlesbrough. As well as some outstanding long-running takeaway venues, many of the town’s best-loved restaurants have turned to delivery, too. Here’s who to order from:
Barbs Pizza
Sensational sourdough pizza is what’s on offer at Barbs Pizza. Always a winner for a weekend takeaway, you’ll be able to choose from dozens of different delicious toppings, with pizzas starting at just £7.50. Collect from the restaurant in person or make the most of their handy local delivery service.
The Teahouse
Really craving a decent coffee and a huge slice of homemade cake? Locally run and well-loved tearoom The Teahouse is still offering their amazing afternoon teas to enjoy in the comfort of your own living room. Order up a full afternoon tea spread – think finger sandwiches, mini cakes and homemade scones with jam and clotted cream. They’ll even deliver to your house for free if you live locally and spend over £15.
To keep you and those working at your favourite local takeaway venues safe, make sure you keep your distance and wear a mask when collecting or receiving food. Don’t live in one of the above towns or cities? We look forward to welcoming you back on our trains soon so you can enjoy their delicious grub at a later date.
