If the last 18 months have taught us anything, it’s that flexible working looks like the future. So to help people who’ll be commuting one day and working from home the next (or however they choose), we’re offering flexibility with our brand-new Flexi Season tickets. Unlike regular Season tickets, they give you the freedom to work at home or in the office whenever it suits you.
From how they work to why they’ll save you money, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you decide whether a Flexi Season ticket is the right option for you.
What is a Flexi Season ticket?
Many commuters used our regular Season tickets in the past to help get them into work five days a week. With working from home becoming more and more common, we’ve introduced a new sort of ticket which offers you much more flexibility.
With a Flexi Season ticket, you’ll only pay for the days you do decide to travel. And the decision on which days those are, is entirely up to you.
How does a Flexi Season ticket work?
Our Flexi Season tickets work by allowing you to travel for eight days within a 28 day period between any two stations.
All you need to do is decide on a start date, and then simply activate your ticket on the days you want to take the train, through one of two ways:
1. By tapping your TransPennine Express Smartcard at the ticket gates or on the platform validator
2. By downloading the National Rail Smartcard Manager app on android or iOS and activating it on there

What savings will I get?
Wondering whether it’s worth the money? You’ll be glad to know that buying a Flexi Season ticket instead of a Monthly Season ticket means you’ll save at least 20% of the overall cost if you mostly choose to travel during peak times (typically between 06.30 – 09.30 and 16.00 – 19.00).
It’s important to note that as Flexi Season tickets are already significantly discounted, it’s not possible to apply a railcard to your purchase unless you have a 16-17 Saver or Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card.

When can I use my Flexi Season ticket?
You’ll be able to use your flexible ticket anytime 7 days a week, including during peak travel times.
And once you’ve activated your ticket on a specific day, you can benefit from unlimited travel between your two chosen stations until 04.29 the following day. That means you can venture back and forth to the office or for meetings as many times as you like.
As you’ll be able to activate your ticket eight times during a 28 day period, you have the flexibility to decide how many days a week you want to commute. One week you might just pop into the office once, while the next you might have face-to-face meetings for two days in a row for example. Now you can choose how you work and travel.
How do I buy a Flexi Season ticket?
If a Flexi Season ticket sounds ideal for your needs, you’ll be able to buy one online then all you need to do is upload the ticket to your Smartcard using the TPExpress App, a ticket machine or at the ticket gates.
Why get a Flexi Season ticket?
As you might have guessed, there are a number of different benefits to switching your regular season ticket to a flexible option. This includes the fact you’ll:
1. Save money by only paying for the journeys you take
2. Save time by having your season ticket ready to go on your Smartcard
3. Be able to travel at both off-peak and peak times
4. Receive a refund for any ticket days you don’t use (conditions apply)
