To allow for engineers to access certain lines and sites, sections of the railway will need to be closed for 15 days between Sunday 18 December 2016 and Monday 02 January 2017.
Trains will still run into Manchester, however the work will mean significant changes to some TransPennine Express (TPE) services, with different alterations applying on different days.
Oxford Road and Deansgate stations will be closed for four days on December 27 and 31 as well as January 1 and 2. Trains entering Manchester from the North West and West of the city will not be able to access Manchester Piccadilly station and many train services will terminate and start at Manchester Victoria station.
As usual, all stations will be closed and no train services will run on Christmas and Boxing Day.
Anyone travelling into Manchester by train on the run up to, during and just after Christmas is being urged to check before they travel and plan their journey accordingly.
The Ordsall Chord, is part of Network Rail’s £1bn+ Railway Upgrade Plan for the north and will improve connections in the region as well as reduce the amount of congestion currently seen at Manchester Piccadilly by a quarter.
Steve Lee, Head of Customer Experience for TPE commented:
“This work is a vital part in improving Manchester’s railway allowing us to introduce more journey opportunities, frequent services and brand new trains.
“The upcoming work will affect our routes between Scotland and Manchester Airport and between Liverpool and Manchester. We are advising everyone to take the time to plan each of their journeys in advance at: tpexpress.co.uk/ordsall which is important as different changes will apply each day.
“We will also be providing extra members of staff at stations including Manchester Piccadilly to assist customers.”
