However, hot weather conditions can have an impact on rail services and really high temperatures can affect the reliability of our trains, which may have to run at reduced speeds. The train tracks themselves can also be affected by high temperatures, as they are made from steel which expands as they heat up. This expansion has to be managed to reduce the risk of track buckling.
To read more about the effect of heat on the tracks, visit: www.networkrail.co.uk/timetables-and-travel/delays-explained/summer-weather
Here are our top three tips for travelling in hot weather:
1. Carry a bottle of water with you
2. Keep an eye on others that may be struggling in the heat and raise any worries or concerns with the conductor
3. Try and travel outside of peak times if you can, when our trains will be slightly quieter
On really hot days, please check before you travel using the National Rail Enquires website or our free Journey Check tool. You can also keep up to date through our app TPExpress or our twitter account@TPEassist
