Thirsk set for car park investment worth £300k

Monday 21st October 2019

Thirsk railway station is to receive an investment of £300,000, which will see the number of car park spaces at the station increase by 50%.

Grand Central, TransPennine Express (TPE) and Network Rail have worked together on this Grand Central funded proposal which will see the car park extended. Once completed, the car park will have 73 standard car park spaces with five accessible spaces and two spaces for taxis.

JMD Rail have been awarded the contract for the expansion that will see the current car park retarmacked and relined, with improvements also made to lighting and drainage.

Once the works are completed, any Network Rail land left over from this project will be turned into a wild biodiversity area. The project will also enable four electric car charging points to be installed within the car park.

Customers are advised that during works, parts of the existing car park will be unavailable while construction works take place, with any disruption kept to a minimum.  Works will commence on 21 October 2019 and are expected to be completed during November.

This isn’t the first time that TransPennine Express and Grand Central have collaborated on projects, as earlier in the year both companies worked together to install grabrails on the footbridge at Thirsk, while under the previous TPE franchise the companies worked together to expand the car park at Northallerton railway station.

Kevin Hollinrake MP for Thirsk and Malton said: “This is very good news. It is something I have been working with TransPennine Express and Grand Central to achieve. I am pleased that they have cooperated together to make it happen. The extra spaces will make a huge difference. I have received many letters from constituents concerned about the lack of parking at Thirsk and I know that these additional spaces will enable more people to choose to travel by train rather than drive.”

Graham Meiklejohn Regional Development Manager for TransPennine Express, said: “We are very pleased to once again work with Grand Central and Network Rail to improve the experience for customers at one of our stations. Thirsk car park is often at capacity throughout the week and these works once completed will provide additional spaces for those parking to travel to destinations across the North and to London.”

Sean English, Grand Central’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We’re delighted to be working again with Network Rail and TransPennine Express to improve the car parking facilities at Thirsk railway station. The investment in the station will vastly improve the experience for all our customers and we hope by having additional spaces more people will choose to travel by train.”
