International Standard Awarded to 'Green' Train Company

17 Nov 2011

A TRAIN operating company has been recognised for its commitment to the environment.

First TransPennine Express (FTPE) has achieved certification to ISO14001, an international standard which is awarded to companies who demonstrate they care about the environment and act on it.

FTPE is the first train operating company outside of London to achieve this certification for all sections of the business.

The ISO 14001 was granted following an external audit of FTPE which highlighted the variety of environmental initiatives throughout the company.

Innovations include:

  • A fuel efficiency programme to reduce the carbon emissions produced by the trains
  • Recycling programmes at stations, on trains and in offices
  • Working with the Forestry Commission to help improve the bio-diversity of woodlands close to train stations and routes and build links with local communities.
  • The use of recycled material
  • Environmental bursaries
  • Reducing energy usage
  • Staff volunteering to be 'Environmental Champions'

Cath Johnston, environmental manager for First TransPennine Express, led the improvements to achieve the international standard.

She said: "I am really pleased that all the hard work we have done as a company has been recognised. This is a great achievement and reflects the excellent environmental awareness and enthusiasm of our employees. Even though rail is one of the most environmentally friendly forms of public transport, ISO14001 demonstrates our commitment to reducing the impact even further."

The ISO14001 audit was carried out by BSI Management Systems, one of the world's largest certification bodies.

BSI Product Manager, Vicki Gomersall, commented: "More and more organisations are seeing ISO 14001 as providing a structured approach to the management of environmental performance and legal compliance within their organisations.

"FTPE has risen to the challenge, and should be proud of its environmental initiatives. Railway organisations have a key role to play in contributing to a sustainable and integrated national transport system, and certification to ISO 14001 allows them to make a unique contribution to the environment and quality of life."

FTPE will continue to be monitored to ensure they maintain their high standards and continue to improve even further.
