First TransPennine Express match fund charity donation

First TransPennine Express (FTPE) has jumped on board with its employees to generously match a kind donation to help St Mary's Hospice, an independent charity who provides care and treatment for those living with life threatening illnesses in Barrow.

Generous First TransPennine Express staff from Barrow Railway Station selflessly donated £360 of a monetary award given to them as recognition for their hard work to the charity. Humbled by this act of generosity, FTPE decided to match the donation, to total £720.

The charity is majorly funded by the generosity of local people and organisations, which has enabled them to invest and care for patients. Average annual running costs for the charity total over £2.5million, only £500,000 came from the local authority and the remainder is generated via voluntary donations.

Mick Elliot, Station Manager for FTPE Barrow commented: "The generosity of my team has overwhelmed me. The money they have decided to donate was a bonus award to each of them for their contribution and hard work during a difficult time for the station, and they have all come together to do something amazing."

His views are supported by the CEO of St Mary's Hospice, Val Stangoe: "Budgets are limited locally and everyone has felt the pinch in recent years when it comes to giving donations."

She explains, "the local authority allocation helps, but we rely on the amazing locals of the area fundraising and donating, alongside the events we hold to keep the hospice running, The generosity we see from people is so heart warming, no matter how big or small the donation, everything helps. We're extremely grateful to FTPE and their staff for their contributions as are our residents and their families."
