Key benefits of the new TransPennine Express franchise by region:

  • Key benefits for Greater Manchester:

    From 2017

    • Six trains an hour in both directions between Manchester and Leeds (over 100 services a day in both directions)
    • Two fast trains an hour in both directions between Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle on brand new intercity trains
    • More seats from Hull, Sheffield and Preston

    From 2019

    • 23 services a day between Manchester and Edinburgh on brand new intercity trains
    • Doubling of capacity between Manchester and Sheffield with all trains operating with six carriages
    • Services between Manchester Airport and Scotland, all to be operated by brand new five carriage intercity trains providing a significant increase in capacity

    Stations

    • As part of an £18m station investment programme (across 19 stations), Manchester Airport station will benefit from an improvement in customer facilities and real time information and the installation of automatic ticket barriers. Brand new ticket vending machines with helpdesk functionality will also be installed
    • Installation of automated ticket gates at Manchester Piccadilly (Platforms 1-3)
  • Key benefits for Humberside:

    • £20m+ refurbishment of Class 185 diesel trains (only brand new in 2006), fitted with free Wi-Fi
    • £1.4m redevelopment of Hull Paragon station in time to welcome the UK Capital of Culture to include improved customer facilities and information and increased retail outlets units
    • Most services will operate with a minimum of six carriages
    • 17 services a day in both directions from December 2017, including later return trains from Leeds
  • Key benefits for Lancashire and Cumbria:

    • All services to and from Scotland will be operated by brand new electric intercity trains with a minimum of five carriages on every service from early 2019
    • Three new services a day in both directions to and from Liverpool on brand new intercity trains
    • Timetable will be improved to provide later evening services and better weekend options
  • Key benefits for Merseyside:

    From 2017

    • New services from St Helens to Manchester, Leeds, York, Newcastle
    • Half hourly fast services to Manchester in 35 minutes with more trains at Newton-le-Willows.  

    From 2018

    • Three brand new services a day in both directions between Liverpool and Glasgow, restoring a historically popular route, again operated
    • New services from St Helens to Glasgow on brand new intercity trains
    • Hourly service in both directions to Newcastle on brand new intercity five carriage trains

    From 2019

    • New direct hourly services to and from Edinburgh on brand new five carriage intercity trains
    • New services from St Helens to Edinburgh
  • Key benefits for Tees Valley:

    From 2017

    • Improved weekend and evening timetables with more connections and travel options including a doubling of frequency on Sundays between Middlesbrough, York and Manchester Airport
    • Increased capacity on the route with the introduction of longer trains on busy services

    From 2019

    • Further Increased capacity and significant improvements in on board experience with the introduction of brand new five carriage intercity trains to replace the current 3 carriage trains

    • Two services an hour in both directions to York, Leeds and Manchester on brand new intercity trains
    • Hourly service to and from Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool
    • From Morpeth, new hourly direct services on brand new intercity trains to Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.
  • Key benefits for North Yorkshire from 2019:

    • Two services an hour to and from Newcastle on brand new intercity trains
    • New hourly service to and from Edinburgh on brand new intercity trains
    • Four trains an hour to and from Manchester on brand new intercity trains
    • Two services an hour to and from Liverpool  and Manchester Airport on brand new intercity trains
    • Trains between York and Leeds will operate with five carriages as opposed some currently operating with three

    • Three brand new services a day in both directions between Glasgow and Liverpool, restoring a historically popular route, operated on brand new intercity trains

    From 2019

    • 34 direct services a day between Glasgow / Edinburgh and Manchester, more than doubling the current timetable
    • New hourly service between Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool operated by brand new five carriage intercity trains
  • Key benefits for South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire:
