This Saturday (9th July), York is hosting the John Smith’s Cup Meeting at York Racecourse, as well as welcoming Middlesbrough FC who will be playing York City FC at Bootham Crescent.
York railway station and particularly rail services between Middlesbrough and York will be extremely busy. TPE, who run frequent services between the two, are putting on extra carriages to help cope with demand, meaning an extra 2,000 seats for customers. However, the last trains of the day will be busier than usual, so customers should try and plan their journey home in advance.
TPE and British Transport Police (BTP) will be providing extra rail staff and officers on the day, and are appealing to customers to treat all staff, officers and fellow passengers with respect.
Kathryn O’Brien, TPE Customer Experience Director, said: “Due to the racing and football in York this Saturday we are expecting services to and from Middlesbrough to be extremely busy. We will be providing extra seats and staff, but would advise customers to plan their journeys in advance to make sure they get home! We want everyone to have a great day, and that includes our staff and BTP officers, so we are appealing to all customers to treat everyone, including their fellow customers, with respect.”
BTP Inspector Richard Price said: “York station and rail routes into York are expected to be extremely busy on Saturday due to the John Smith’s Cup Meeting at the racecourse and York FC playing Middleborough. Please plan ahead and give yourself extra time to travel.
“Extra officers and rail staff will be at the station, and on board trains alongside travelling fans and race goers to answer any questions passengers may have, as well as ensuring everyone travels to and from the game and races safely.
“We want everyone to have a great day but would like to remind people that trains are not extensions of bars, the terraces or the races; they are used by everyone including families, young people and the elderly. We are asking that people watch their alcohol consumption and their behaviour when around other passengers. You will not be allowed to travel if you are drunk, intoxicated and displaying intimidating behaviour to others.”
