The women who are taking the North further
In honour of International Women’s Day, TransPennine Express (TPE) is taking the opportunity to showcase some of its most inspiring women who are making tracks in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
Attracting more women into the rail industry is high on the agenda for TPE, a train company which employs 1,095 colleagues from across the North and into Scotland as they are on a mission to create a more diverse workforce.
The commitment to diversity is clear from the top down, with four out of ten Executive team members being women.
TPE is currently prioritising a campaign to create further balance ensuring the workforce accurately represents the communities it serves.
There are more roles on offer than simply being a train driver and the company offers a wide variety of different roles in everything from accountancy to customer experience to engineering and IT. Here, we showcase some of the more unique positions held by women at TPE.

“There are some truly fantastic, talented women working across our business in a wide variety of different roles, from customer experience on the frontline to roles in engineering and train planning. Our Executive team of ten also includes four, female directors which provides great balance to decision making.
“Despite this, there is still more work to be done when it comes to addressing gender balance, creating a more diverse team that reflects the communities we serve. Currently, women make up just 20 per cent of the rail sector and this is something that we need to change.
“A career in rail offers lots of benefits, including competitive salaries and flexible working in a dynamic, growing industry. There are opportunities available in wide range of areas, such as accounting, customer service, marketing, IT and railway operations and you don't have to be mad about trains to join the team; just passionate about giving great customer service.”
