Charlie from Manchester
“I've been collecting donations to fund shopping trips for local food banks at Christmas for about 5 years, but when lockdown began I realised the need was going to skyrocket. We alternated between taking money donations one week, and picking up and sorting food donations the next. We raised over £12,000 and collected over 10 tons of food donations across lockdown, translating to 62,000 meals for people who needed them. The motivation was simple, people were hungry and I wasn't, and I couldn't just sit back and let that happen.”

Stephen from Carlisle
“I’m a local business owner in Carlisle. For 16 weeks during lockdown and beyond, our small team prepared, cooked and delivered over 7,500 hot, nutritious meals to the doorstep for children from Petteril Bank School – the only school in Carlisle to offer this service. During the crisis, I just wanted to help and give something back to my community.”

Lesley from Cheshire
“I work for the NHS and during the pandemic many staff members became ill or had to isolate due to family members being ill. I decided to work extra shifts to support my colleagues and ensure that our patients still received the excellent care they can expect from the NHS. I felt that supporting all key workers and volunteers was important to keeping the country going during such a difficult time.”

Chris from Carlisle
“Throughout the pandemic I organised a group of volunteers to help deliver food to vulnerable people, essential PPE to places in need, treats to key workers, board games and knitting accessories to care homes and much more throughout Carlisle. Lots of local businesses got behind our group and donated vouchers so we could hold online raffles and raise money to keep going. In total we raised £15,000, £2,000 of which we donated to 6 local charities. I organised and planned the group whilst working long days as a delivery driver and having a little girl at home. I’m so proud of what we managed to achieve, helping boost spirit and morale in the city of Carlisle.”
