Why take the train to Edinburgh?

Once you arrive you are straight in the thick of it.

Top Attractions

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh’s top attraction is its imposing castle. Dominating the city from on high, this sprawling fortress houses museums and memorials as well as Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone Of Destiny which has been used in the coronation of monarchs since the 13th century. Every year the castle hosts the Royal Military Tattoo, a pageant full of pomp and ceremony and ending with a haunting tune from a lone piper. Another great tradition is the firing of the one o’clock gun – except on Sundays when sore heads might not be able to take it!

Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is a collection of streets winding through Edinburgh’s old town and a magnet for visitors thanks to numerous bars, restaurants, venues and street performers. Branching off the main thoroughfare are a number of closes, little courtyards with towering buildings all around. The most famous close is the reportedly haunted Mary King’s Close, now immortalised in a living history attraction - The Real Mary King’s Close.

Edinburgh Zoo

Trains to Edinburgh connect with buses so you can quickly make your way to the city’s world-famous zoo. Just as well it’s so easy to get here, because you’ll need as much time as possible to meet a huge range of animals from pandas to penguins and Asiatic lions to yellow-footed tortoises. In fact Tian Tian and Yang Guang are the only two giant pandas in the UK and enjoy celebrity status in the zoo. This modern and innovative attraction features fascinating attractions. The Budongo Trail, for example, is an indoor and outdoor environment where visitors see chimpanzees up close.

Scotch Whisky Experience

Whether or not you enjoy a dram of whisky, this really is quite an experience. Climb aboard a ride which takes you around a replica distillery for starters. Then settle down for a wee dram while you dine in the restaurant. There are plenty of tasting experiences too, so it’s just as well hotels and Edinburgh Waverley station are in easy reach.

Scottish Parliament

After recent debates around its independence from the rest of UK, there’s no doubt the Scottish Parliament is a busy and engaging place. Visitors can enjoy a free guided tour, without the need to book in advance, and you can even request tickets to watch the action in the debating chamber.
