Sheffield and Cleethorpes Changes

Train company TransPennine Express (TPE) is introducing brand new services for customers on the route between Cleethorpes, Sheffield and Manchester.

The additional trains are being brought in as part of a major timetable change taking place on 10 December 2017 and will include extra services on both Saturdays and Sundays.

As a result of the enhancements, Manchester and Sheffield will gain three new services to Cleethorpes while there will be two in the opposite direction from Cleethorpes to Manchester.

The changes will include brand new morning trains (07:51, 09:51 and 11:55) direct from Manchester to Cleethorpes (via Sheffield) on Sundays, creating more options for those in need of a trip to the seaside and a large portion of fish and chips.

Customers in Cleethorpes will also be able to travel direct to Manchester Airport on brand new 12:12 or 20:26 Sunday services.

This is a significant move towards delivering the Great North Rail Project, including more than 2,000 more services per week by 2020, improving capacity and better connecting customers with business, leisure and tourism opportunities across the North.

TPE’s existing trains are currently being treated to a £32million upgrade with many of these already out carrying customers across the rail network.

The modern makeover includes new seating, carpets, larger tables, LED lighting, refitted toilets and plug and USB charging points at every pair of seats. Fast free Wi-Fi is also being installed in both Standard and First Class as is a brand new entertainment system, Exstream featuring news, films and TV shows, including selected episodes of Games of Thrones, League of Their Own and Coronation Street.

Local suppliers are also being used including Diamond Seating in Rotherham, who have provided seat covers for the new-look trains.

Leo Goodwin, Managing Director for TransPennine Express: “We are thrilled to be able to bring in new journey opportunities for those travelling between Cleethorpes, Sheffield and Manchester.

“These new services will really provide more choice and greater flexibility for our customers, particularly those planning a trip to the seaside in Cleethorpes or a Sunday shopping spree in Sheffield.”

Rail Minister Paul Maynard said: “I am delighted to welcome this significant milestone for TransPennine Express services to and from Manchester and Sheffield. This is a key part of the Great North Rail Project and demonstrates our commitment to transforming rail services across the region and to put passengers at the heart of everything we do.

“Across the north, in just a few years, we will see even more new services, new carriages and space for 40,000 more passengers a day. This is all part of the biggest investment in transport in the region for a generation.”

Councillor Liam Robinson, Chair of Rail North said: “These franchise deliveries mark the start of a series of significant enhancements to rail services in the North and will make real differences to people’s lives. Rail North will continue to work closely with TPE and our other regional train operating companies to ensure the good news keeps coming.”

Welcoming the new services, Stephen Edwards, Executive Director, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, said: “TPE’s additional services will increase the range of travel options for customers across South Yorkshire and to destinations beyond. With the planned improvements to existing trains and new trains to come later next year, customers will see a step-change in the quality and frequency of services, providing a useful and cost-effective alternative to the car. I hope this encourages more customers onto this vitally important link across the county.”
TPE are delivering an investment of £500million over the next three years in enhancements including new journey opportunities and more seats.
