Disruption between Edinburgh and Newcastle due to a broken rail. Find out more
ASLEF industrial action- 6-11 May. Find out more
As a rail operator that serves both the North of England and Scotland, it’s vital we offer a service that provides great links between communities. Where possible, we always look to find further opportunities to connect even more communities by rail.
Across our network there have been a number of initiatives and celebrations of our colleagues and the services we look to offer. Take a look at what’s been happening during the past six months.
Driver Joe Crean celebrates 52 years on the railway
Joe was greeted by a PA announcement congratulating him on his outstanding service and was met by the applause and well wishes of his friends, family and fellow railway workers.
Joe is amongst the rare few who have achieved the 50-year milestone on the railway, and he lit up Manchester Piccadilly depot with his humour, hard work, loyalty and diligence. Joe’s retirement marks the end of an era but his legacy and contributions towards the future generation of drivers will carry on at TPE.
Nova 1 named ‘Palace of Holyroodhouse’ in honour of King Charles III
In May we named a Nova 1 train the ‘Palace of Holyroodhouse’ in honour King Charles III, ahead of his much-anticipated coronation.
The regally-named Class 802 was unveiled at Edinburgh Waverley Station, just a stone’s throw away from the 16th century palace, and set off on its inaugural journey to the sound of the Border Piper, Sandy Mutch.
We were thrilled to be able to celebrate our new King by naming one of our Nova 1 trains in His Majesty’s honour and wanted to pay homage to the extensive royal history that Scotland has to offer by naming it after King Charles’ III official residence in Edinburgh.
We marked the one-year anniversary of the re-opening of Reston station in May with plans for low carbon journeys and a trial removal of peak time fares. This was part of new agreement with Transport Scotland to continue operating services that call at Reston for a further year.
The agreement sees TPE call at Reston seven times a day Mondays to Saturdays with six calls in each direction on Sundays until 01 June 2024. Under that agreement, we have worked with rail industry partners to enable two services a day that operate with diesel power, to become fully electric, thereby reducing carbon emissions further.
More than 15,000 TPE customer journeys have been made to or from the station since it opened on 23 May 2022, a remarkable figure considering the village had no direct rail link for the previous 50 years.
Not to mention we have been the main driver of success at the East Berwickshire station with 90 per cent of all journeys (16,800) completed on our Nova 1 fleet.
Dewsbury celebrates it’s 175th anniversary
In June celebrations were held at Dewsbury's iconic railway station to commemorate its past, present, and future.
TransPennine Express (TPE), Network Rail, and Friends of Dewsbury Station joined forces to celebrate the station’s 175th anniversary with customers and local residents welcomed to the station by the fabulous Dewsbury Community Choir.
Dewsbury station has been at the heart of the town’s community for the past 175 years and has paid a key role in connecting the town to Huddersfield, Leeds, Manchester, York, and beyond. Now the station will look forward to the next chapter, the exciting investment coming through the Transpennine Route Upgrade.
Hull Paragon’s visionary mural
In September we embarked on an artistic journey as work on Hull Paragon’s visionary mural started to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Hull Paragon Interchange.
We commissioned Hull-based artist, Andy Pea, who, in collaboration with students of Ron Dearing UTC and with ideas from the users of the Interchange and from the wider public, has created a vibrant public art piece that will serve as a visual chronicle of Hull's history.
Andy, a practising artist for more than 25 years and previous collaborator with TPE is thrilled to be working with us on this unique project and is excited to unveil the finished mural alongside us when completed.
A multi-agency safeguarding hub opens at Hull Paragon
In August we opened the doors to a new multi-agency safeguarding hub in a bid to make Hull Paragon Station even safer, following a £100k investment.
The Safer Hull Paragon Hub, created in collaboration with Hull City Council, British Transport Police (BTP), Humberside Police, local community agencies and support-providing charities, provides a consistent point of contact for those in need.
We’re delighted to open the new hub and provide a point of contact to help protect vulnerable people on our railway as part of our ongoing commitment to making our network safer.
