Changes To Train Times

From time to time maintenance work needs to be carried out on the rail network to help improve our rail services. Generally this work will occur overnight or at weekends.

Search below to find out if there are any planned changes to our train times that may affect your journey.

Some alterations listed below may involve rail replacement coach services when trains are unable to run.

  • Weekend alterations (Bank Holiday Weekend) - 28/05/2016 - 29/05/2016

    South Trans-Pennine route

    Services between Manchester and Sheffield, Doncaster & Cleethorpes

    Saturday

    The 1926 Cleethorpes to Sheffield service will be diverted between Swinton and Meadowhall and will not call at Rotherham Central.

    Sunday

    The 0838 Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes service will be diverted between Meadowhall and Swinton and will not call at Rotherham Central.

    The 2026 Cleethorpes to Sheffield service will be diverted between Swinton and Meadowhall and will not call at Rotherham Central.

    Services between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle will start from / terminate at Manchester Victoria*.

    Sunday only - The 0901 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle service will start from Leeds.

    Alternative services to / from Liverpool Lime Street are available via (Manchester Piccadilly and Warrington Central) as advertised in the current timetable

    Manchester to Scotland route

    Services between Manchester, Preston, Lancaster and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

    Saturday & Sunday

    Services on this route will operate between Manchester Airport and Lancaster only.

    Rail replacement coach services will be in operation between:

    • Lancaster and Carlisle via Oxenholme and Penrith.
    • Carlisle and Glasgow Central via Lockerbie (provided by Virgin Trains)
    • Carlisle and Edinburgh Waverley via Lockerbie

    Please note: The coach pick up point at Edinburgh is at a different location than normal (Jeffrey Street).

    Additional staff will be on hand to escort customers between the station and the coach loading / unloading point.   A map is available here

    Coach services will depart Edinburgh EARLIER than the normal train times. No service at Haymarket - customers should use Edinburgh Waverley.

    Journey times on this route north of Lancaster will be significantly longer than normal.

    Saturday only - The 1900 Manchester Airport to Preston service will be extended to Lancaster.

    Sunday only - The 1000 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service will be diverted after Lancaster to operate to Barrow-in-Furness.

    Additional train services will operate between Preston and Lancaster (hourly service) due to Virgin Trains being unable to operate their usual services on this part of the route.

    Reason for these alterations?

    Junction replacement / remodelling and overhead power line works at Oxenholme.
    Track renewal / upgrade between Oxenholme and Carlisle.
    Track renewal / upgrade between Carlisle and Haymarket / Glasgow Central.

    The 0422, 0709, 0906 & 1109 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport, 0615, 0812, 1008 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport services will start from Lancaster.

    Replacement coach services will operate from Carlisle (dep 0655, 0755, 0855 & 0955) to Lancaster via Penrith and Oxenholme.

    The 0500 Manchester Piccadilly to Glasgow Central, 0700 & 0900 Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central, 0558, 0729 & 1000 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh services will terminate at Lancaster.

    Rail replacement coach services will operate from Lancaster (dep 0610, 0725, 0825, 0900) to Carlisle via Oxenholme and Penrith.

    There will be no train service between Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh all day.

    The 1100, 1300, 1500 & 1700 Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800 & 2000 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh services will terminate at Carlisle.

    The 1309, 1509 & 1709 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport, 1212, 1417, 1612, 1813 & 2014 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport services will start from Carlisle.

    Replacement coach services will operate between Carlisle and Edinburgh Waverley via Lockerbie.

    Replacement coach services will also operate between Carlisle and Glasgow Central provided by Virgin Trains.

    NOTE: There will be no coach services serving Haymarket - customers should use Edinburgh Waverley station as an alternative. Coach departures from Edinburgh will be at different times to the normal train departures.

    Tuesday to Friday

    The 0138 & 0252 York to Manchester Airport services will depart Huddersfield 13 minutes later than normal.

    The 0521 York to Manchester Airport service will not call at Dewsbury.

    A replacement coach will run from Dewsbury departing at 0601 to Huddersfield.

    The 0038 Manchester Airport to York will depart Leeds 10 minutes later than normal.

    The 0422 Manchester Airport to Newcastle service will be retimed to depart Huddersfield EARLIER at 0525.

    Wednesday only

    The 2022 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle service will not call at Thirsk.

    Customers for Thirsk should remain on the train to NORTHALLERTON and change there for a mini bus back to Thirsk.

    A mini bus will run from Thirsk departing at 2235 to Northallerton to connect with the train.

    Friday only

    An additional train will run from York (dep 2012) to Middlesbrough calling at Thirsk, Northallerton, Yarm and Thornaby.

    Monday to Thursday

    The 2155 Newcastle to Manchester Airport service will arrive at Manchester Piccadilly 29 minutes later than normal and Manchester Airport 23 minutes later than normal.

    The 2230 York to Manchester Piccadilly service will arrive at Manchester Piccadilly 29 minutes later than normal.

    The 2315 Manchester Airport to York service will not call at Huddersfield.

    A replacement bus will operate from Huddersfield (departing at 0025) to Dewsbury to connect with the train and then return to Huddersfield connecting off the train.

    Tuesday to Friday

    The 0138 & 0252 York to Manchester Airport services will not call at Huddersfield but will call additionally at Brighouse.

    Replacement buses will operate from Huddersfield (departing 0225 & 0340) to Brighouse to connect with the train and will then return from Brighouse to Huddersfield connecting off the train (bus journey time 15 mins).

    The 0038 Manchester Airport to York service will start from Manchester Piccadilly 0109. A replacement coach will run from Manchester Airport (departing 0015) to Manchester Piccadilly to connect with this train.

    For ten Sundays (19 June to 21 August) Network Rail will be carrying out essential maintenance work on the line between Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly preventing TransPennine Express running its normal timetable on the route between Leeds and Manchester / Liverpool.

    Usually up to four trains each hour operate between Leeds and Manchester but with our normal, direct route closed, only two services each hour will be able to run via an alternative route between the two cities (the Calder Valley route).

    Services between Leeds – Manchester – Liverpool:

    One service each hour will operate to / from Liverpool Lime Street via Manchester Victoria, a second service will operate to / from Manchester Airport via Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly. Neither service will call at Huddersfield.

    Services between Huddersfield and Manchester

    Unfortunately some direct journey opportunities will not be available on these dates especially to / from Huddersfield.

    Until 0900 and from 1900 an hourly express coach service will operate between Huddersfield and Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly.

    Between 0900 and 1900 this coach service will call at Stockport (instead of Manchester Piccadilly) where customers will need to change for frequent train services to / from Manchester Piccadilly.

    A replacement bus service will also operate between Huddersfield and Stalybridge (operated by Northern).

    A replacement bus service will also operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Stalybridge - timetable available here

    Customers travelling between Huddersfield and Liverpool Lime Street will need to change services at Dewsbury.

    From the EAST (ie Leeds) only 2 TPE services each hour will operate to Huddersfield (services from Hull and Scarborough)

    Services to / from York and the North East

    Services to the east of Leeds will operate at the normal Sunday frequency although some departure times may be slightly different.

    Services between Manchester and Liverpool

    There will be no TransPennine Express services between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street, via Birchwood and Warrington Central.

    An hourly service will operate between Manchester VICTORIA and Liverpool calling at Newton-le-Willows.

    For customers travelling to/from Warrington Central a replacement coach service will operate between Warrington Central and Newton-le-Willows connecting with services between Liverpool Lime Street and York / Newcastle.

    Alternative services provided by other operators are available between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street, via Birchwood and Warrington Central.

    Usually up to four trains each hour operate between Leeds and Manchester but with our normal, direct route closed, only two services each hour will be able to run via an alternative route between the two cities (the Calder Valley route).

    Services between Leeds – Manchester – Liverpool:

    One service each hour will operate to / from Liverpool Lime Street via Manchester Victoria, a second service will operate to / from Manchester Airport via Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly. Neither service will call at Huddersfield.
