From the tracks to the pavements for FTPE

30 May 2013

30 members of FirstTransPennine Express staff from across the North of England ran the Manchester 10k on Sunday 26th May, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, First Group's chosen charity.

Employees have been putting hard work in their training over the last few months, and saw their efforts rewarded at the weekend as 30 staff completed the full course around Manchester. Some colleagues even managed to achieve impressive sub 39mins for the city centre course and finished in the top 250 competitors.

FTPE participants took part to raise money for Macmillan but also as a wider workplace wellbeing inititative. Runners were from across the business and featured, directors, drivers, conductors and head office colleagues.

FTPE paid each runner's entry fee and has made a £600 donation to Macmillan on behalf of the runners for the race and has this year generated several thousands of pounds for the cancer support charity.

Runner Kathryn O'Brien, Head of Franchise Development  said:  "It was a bit of a struggle towards the end but I'm so proud of us all for completing the race and thanks so much to our friends and family and of course our colleagues from FTPE who turned out to support us - it really means a lot when someone is cheering you over that finish line! We're proud to represent FTPE and to raise money for such a great cause."

Kate Lamb, Business and Community Improvement Manager , said: "Each year, we support a team of runners who take part in the Manchester 10k - the commitment required to run the race and the training in the build up to it are great for well-being and the donations raised are for a fantastic cause. Each year we support projects and organisations that focus on health, young people and the environment and this year's charity, Macmillan, does such fantastic work on behalf of cancer patients and their families. We're grateful to everyone who took time to run the 10k for such a great cause."

The FTPE team raised £600.00 on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support. FirstGroup forged its partnership with Macmillan in July 2012 and has so far raised more than £350k in cash and kind, including the donation of advertising space, for people affected by cancer.
