Instagram-worthy getaways

At TransPennine Express we’ve got some seriously Instagram-worthy destinations on our network. You don’t have to take our word for it though! We sent a few travel bloggers who love the North and Scotland on a mini trip. If you’re keen for ideas for a mid-week city break or some Scotland train travel inspiration, take a look at how their trips went.

Berwick-upon-Tweed with @exploringedinburgh

Shawna’s trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed was full of quaint cobbled streets, vintage shops, and independent bookstores. She even found a cosy bookshop with a mural of Hagrid from Harry Potter on the ceiling, which you definitely don’t see every day! Berwick-upon-Tweed is less than an hour from Edinburgh Waverley, so it’s easy to reach by train.

If exploring a peaceful Scottish town is your dream staycation,

Manchester with @ontheroadagaintravels

Ashley and Stuart took a mid-week train trip from Glasgow to Manchester. You can hop on a direct TransPennine Express train from Glasgow Central to Manchester Oxford Road in just over 3 hours! There’s plenty to explore in Manchester’s lively city centre – Ashley and Stuart enjoyed Manchester’s great restaurants, some shopping, and a relaxed evening of drinks and music.

Newcastle with @iangblack

Ian went on a 2-day staycation trip to Newcastle, a fab city that ticks all the boxes – if you love a city break you won’t be disappointed. Plus, if you travel with TransPennine Express you can get to Newcastle direct from plenty of big cities in the UK. The trip is under 2 hours from Leeds or Edinburgh and only an hour from York! Newcastle is the home of some iconic sites such as the Angel of the North, all while being just a few minutes from the coast. Ian made the most of Newcastle by visiting a gallery, the River Tyne Bridge, and more.

If you’ve always been tempted by a trip to Newcastle,

Dunbar with @scotlands_stories

Graeme really made the most of travelling mid-week with his trip to Dunbar. Dunbar is only half an hour train from Edinburgh, known for its rugged coastline, scenic harbours, and castle ruins. You don’t have to be local to Scotland to go on a trip to Dunbar either – you can hop on a direct TransPennine Express train from Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, and more! If you go mid-week, you can enjoy all the best bits and avoid the crowds. Graeme had a smoked haddock scotch egg and scallops without having to book a table – it looked delicious!

Liverpool with @_lisa_dawson

Lisa is based in York (another lovely destination on our network), so she loved how easy it was to jump on a direct TranPennine Express train to Liverpool in less than 2 hours. Lisa had a great time enjoying what Liverpool does best – culture and shopping! There’s loads of interesting places to visit, like the Tate Gallery or the Museum of Liverpool. If you’re more interested in shopping, you’re in luck. Liverpool has a good mix of shopping centres like Liverpool One and quirky little independent stores. You definitely won’t be short on things to do!
