Jumbo Records

Leeds

Now trading for 40 years, Jumbo Records began life in a small room at the back of a tape equipment store. A Punk explosion later, this gem is now the city's major independent music store, found at the St John's Centre. Renowned for its clued-up staff, Jumbo stocks racks of rare 1970s 7" singles alongside the latest indie releases and tickets for live gigs.

Attic Records

York

Even CDs are too mainstream for this charmingly informal store which, as its name suggests, sells records out of an attic at 1 Patrick Pool in  York. Small and friendly, if you fancy a cuppa while you look, all you have to do is ask. The A-Z of classics are all here, from The Beatles to The Who, as well as an array of funk and Northern Soul records.

Probe Records

Liverpool

Newly based in the creative hub that is  the Bluecoat building on School Lane, Probe Records has been a institution in this city for more than 30 years. It even features in Awaydays, Kevin Sampson's cult coming of age novel set in the late 1970s. Probe has an eclectic stock and is a great port of call for golden oldie must-haves that you can't find on the high street.

Love music

Glasgow

Love Music, on Dundas Street, is on the independent map as much for its live performances as for the music it sells. KT Tunstall, Moby and Laura Marling have all played here over the years and the store is equally involved in promoting local, lesser known artists. Love specialises in both new and second-hand indie and alternative music.
