The Zanzibar Club

If you're after open mic slots or showcase nights for new bands, head to the Zanzibar on Seel Street. It might be a small space but it's got plenty of personality, and with touring headliners including Jake Bugg and local favourites such as The Sums and The Rialto Burns it proves consistently popular with the city's music fans.

The Magnet

You might be fooled into thinking that The Magnet is one of Liverpool's unsung heroes, but in its time it has been awarded 'Best Bar in Liverpool' by the Guardian (2008) and even made it to number 29 in GQ's 'Best Bars in the World' round-up in 2007. It's not just the bar that keeps them coming, though: it's the music. With live gigs from rock to house, hip-hop and soul, whatever your flavour you'll find it here.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

Housed in an impressive art deco concert hall, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is the city's grandest music venue. Performances here span everything from classical, performed by the full orchestra, to modern crooners The Overtones, fabulous folk singers and even the Bootleg Beatles. The resident orchestra is the UK's oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra, and is world renowned - worth a try even if you're a classical novice.

O2 Academy

Not content with having one major live music venue in Liverpool, the O2 Academy actually has two - the second being aptly named 'Academy 2'. Both have packed listings, with major touring artists appearing at the academy proper (Maximo Park, The Vaccines, Band of Skulls and Ellie Goulding are all lined up for this autumn) while Academy 2 hosts a variety of club nights as well as up-and-coming nights for the next big thing…

Cavern Club

Little is needed by way of introduction for the Cavern Club. The spot considered to be where Beatle mania began is now the place that many fans make their pilgrimage. They won't be disappointed, as tribute acts regularly grace the stage, but there's also a mix of original artists worth a look on most (if not all eight) days a week.
