Changes To Train Times

From time to time maintenance work needs to be carried out on the rail network to help improve our rail services. Generally this work will occur overnight or at weekends.

Search below to find out if there are any planned changes to our train times that may affect your journey.

Some alterations listed below may involve rail replacement bus services when trains are unable to run.

The location of bus pick up points are shown on the Onward Travel Information poster displayed at most stations or online here

Where rail replacement buses are in operation, heavy luggage, bicycles, prams etc and animals (other than registered assistance dogs) cannot be conveyed.

  • Monday to Friday alterations - 29/06/2015 - 03/07/2015

    South Trans-Pennine route

    Services between Manchester and Sheffield, Doncaster & Cleethorpes

    Services between Manchester, Preston, Blackpool, Cumbria & Scotland

    Due to tunnel reconstruction work taking place at Farnworth (near Bolton) services on the Manchester to Preston route via Bolton and Chorley will operate to a revised timetable

    Monday to Friday

    The majority of First TransPennine Express services between Manchester and Blackpool North / Barrow-in-Furness will be diverted via an alternative route and will not call at Bolton, Horwich Parkway or Chorley with selected services calling additionally at Wigan North Western.

    To cater for commuters a small number of morning peak time services TOWARDS Manchester will continue to call at Chorley, Horwich Parkway and Bolton.

    A number of evening peak time services FROM Manchester will continue to call at Bolton, Horwich Parkway and Chorley.

    At all other times a reduced frequency service (provided by Northern Rail) will operate at Bolton and Chorley.

    Sunday

    Overnight / early morning services between Manchester and York via Stalybridge, Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Leeds will be amended until 0800 with buses replacing trains over much of this route.

    The 0021 Huddersfield to York service will terminate at Leeds.

    The 0512 & 0718 Huddersfield to York services will not run.

    The 0400 & 0612 York to Huddersfield services will not run.

    The 0512 & 0712 York to Huddersfield services will start from Leeds.

    The 2018 Leeds to Hull service will depart Leeds later at 2034.

    Network Rail engineers will be carrying out essential maintenance work on the line between Huddersfield and Stalybridge all day.

    This will prevent First TransPennine Express running its normal timetable on the route between Leeds and Manchester / Liverpool.

    Usually up to four trains each hour operate between Leeds and Manchester but with our normal route closed, only two services each hour will be able to run (via an alternative route) between the two cities.

    Leeds – Manchester – Liverpool

    One service each hour will operate to / from Liverpool Lime Street via Manchester Victoria, a second service each hour will operate to / from Manchester Airport via Manchester Victoria, Manchester Oxford Rd and Manchester Piccadilly.

    Services to / from Huddersfield

    Unfortunately some direct journey opportunities will not be available especially to / from Huddersfield.

    • Until 0900 and from 1900 an hourly express coach service will operate between Huddersfield and Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly.

    • Between 0900 and 1900 this coach service will call at Stockport (instead of Manchester Piccadilly) where customers will need to change for frequent train services to / from Manchester Piccadilly.

    • A replacement bus service will also operate between Huddersfield and Stalybridge (operated by Northern Rail).

    • Customers travelling between Huddersfield and Liverpool Lime Street will need to change services at Stalybridge.

    Services to / from York and the North East

    Services to the east of Leeds will operate at the normal Sunday frequency although some departure times may be slightly different.

    Replacement buses will operate between Manchester Airport and Preston calling at Manchester Piccadilly, Bolton, Horwich Parkway and Chorley.

    The 2022 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle service will not call at Thirsk.

    Customers for Thirsk should remain on the train to NORTHALLERTON and change there for a mini bus back to Thirsk.

    A mini bus will run from Thirsk departing at 2230 to Northallerton to connect with the train.

    Friday

    ***LATE NOTICE ALTERATIONS***

    Services between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central will terminate at / start from Lockerbie.

    Replacement coaches will be provided between Lockerbie and Glasgow Central.

    NORTHBOUND: For customers travelling to Glasgow Central this will extend your journey by 45 mins.

    SOUTHBOUND: For customers travelling from Glasgow Central only this will extend your journey by 65 mins.

    Note: Virgin Trains services will continue to operate between Preston / Carlisle and Glasgow Central via an alternative route.

    A replacement bus will operate from Manchester Airport departing at 2320 to York via Manchester Piccadilly (2345), Huddersfield (0045), Dewsbury (0110 to set down only) and Leeds (0135 to set down only).

    Tuesday to Friday

    The 0138 & 0252 York to Manchester Victoria services will not call at Huddersfield but will call additionally at Brighouse.

    Replacement buses will operate from Huddersfield (dep 0225 & 0340) to Brighouse to connect with the train and will then return from Brighouse to Huddersfield connecting off the train.

    Replacement coaches at Sheffield will depart from / arrive at Stands E5 & E6 at Sheffield bus station which is situated across the road from the main entrance to the railway station (5 minutes walk) and is clearly signposted.

    The 2155 Newcastle to Manchester Airport service will be diverted to terminate at Manchester Victoria with a replacement bus provided forward to Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly.

    The 0230, 0400 & 0512 York to Manchester Airport services will be diverted to terminate at Manchester Victoria with replacement buses provided forward to Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly.

    The 0612 York to Manchester Airport service will be diverted, will not call at Stalybridge and will terminate at Manchester Victoria.

    A replacement bus will run from Huddersfield (0650) to Manchester Airport via Stalybridge (0735), Manchester Victoria (0800) and Manchester Piccadilly.

    The 0712 York to Manchester Airport service will be diverted, will not call at Stalybridge and will arrive at Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport 26 minutes later than advertised.

    A replacement bus will run from Huddersfield (0735) to Manchester Piccadilly via Stalybridge (0820).

     

    The 0100 & 0425 Manchester Airport to York services will be diverted to start from Manchester Victoria at 0059 & 0424 respectively. Replacement buses will operate from Manchester Airport (0015 & 0340) via Manchester Piccadilly (0040 & 0405) to connect.

    The 0630 Manchester Airport to York service will be diverted to start from Manchester Victoria at 0631 and will not call at Stalybridge. A replacement bus will operate from Manchester Airport (dep 0545) via Manchester Piccadilly (0610) to connect.

    An additional bus will run from Manchester Piccadilly (dep 0600) to Huddersfield via Stalybridge (0625).

    The 0729 Manchester Airport to Newcastle service will be diverted to start from Manchester Victoria at 0730. A replacement bus will operate from Manchester Airport (0645) to Manchester Victoria (via Manchester Piccadilly 0710) to connect and continue to Huddersfield via Stalybridge (0745).

    The majority of First TransPennine Express services between Manchester and Blackpool North / Barrow-in-Furness will be diverted via an alternative route and will not call at Bolton, Horwich Parkway or Chorley but will call additionally at Wigan North Western.

    To cater for commuters a small number of morning peak time services TOWARDS Manchester will continue to call at Chorley, Horwich Parkway and Bolton.

    A number of evening peak time services FROM Manchester will continue to call at Bolton, Horwich Parkway and Chorley.

    At all other times a reduced frequency service (provided by Northern Rail) will operate at Bolton and Chorley.

    *Saturday - The 0612 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle service will be re-timed to depart EARLIER at 0606 and will not call at Manchester Victoria but will call additionally at Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly.

    *Sunday - The 0912 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle service will start from Leeds.

    Replacement buses at Manchester Piccadilly depart from outside the main entrance to the station and are clearly sign-posted.
