Our Apprenticeship Scheme
TransPennine Express (TPE) offers a range of apprenticeship opportunities across the business, including within the Major Projects, Service Planning, Engineering, Finance, Human Resources and Customer Experience departments. Through the apprenticeship programme, our apprentices also work towards a professional qualification and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
In September 2021, we welcomed 13 apprentices who are currently undertaking a two-year apprenticeship. They are all benefitting from learning the skills and knowledge needed to follow a career in the rail sector while earning a wage at the same time.
Apprenticeships explained
We offer a two-year scheme where apprentices can ‘earn while they learn’ and gain the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in the rail sector.
Train, Retain, and Achieve
We TRAIN- to future proof our apprentices’ careers.
We RETAIN- ensuring our apprentices gain the skills and knowledge needed to make an impact and remain with TPE as future talent.
We ACHIEVE- releasing the potential of our apprentices to help them transform their future.

Meet our Talent and Apprenticeship Manager
Becky Jones, Talent and Apprenticeship Manager at TPE, said: “We have a brilliant group of young talent on our apprenticeship scheme, working in a variety of areas across the business. I am delighted to have the opportunity of overseeing the apprenticeship programme and ensuring this is an opportunity that benefits each apprentice, allowing them to grow, not only in their roles, but also as individuals, whilst supporting them in the first steps in their career. This is an exciting time to work at TransPennine Express.”
Post Apprenticeship Success Stories - securing full time positions
Our apprentices join the business in their chosen field and are then given the opportunity to move around the entire company in a structured and controlled approach through a rotation system. This allows our apprentices to see areas of the business they may not have previously considered and helps gain new skills and experience.
The TPE apprenticeship scheme is about helping develop a person’s career in rail. We are proud that eight previous apprentices from our 2019 cohort successfully secured full-time positions with TPE, including Leah Brook, our Customer Information Assistant.
Leah said: “I started my time as an apprentice in the performance team, where I learned about how the railway operates. I then moved on to a placement with the Communications team in customer information which eventually led to me securing a permanent role in this team as Customer Information Assistant. Doing the apprenticeship scheme, and securing a permanent job at TPE, was a huge achievement for me. The apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic gateway into the rail industry. From my time doing the apprenticeship, I also had the opportunity to complete my gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, which I am extremely proud of. I would recommend the apprenticeship scheme to anyone who is looking to kickstart their career in the railway.”
