Your guide to Easter weekend 2024

Easter Sunday 2024 falls on 31st March. Whether you celebrate it or not, you might be wondering how exactly to fill the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend. Fancy getting outdoors for a walk? Or what about enjoying a few fun days out with the kids?

There are also plenty of seasonal activities to help fill Easter weekend and the days and weeks surrounding it. From eggciting Easter egg hunts to delicious Sunday roast dining options, here are some of our favourites at destinations across our network:

  1. Make your own delicious Easter treats in York

  2. Make your way to York this Easter to sample sumptuous chocolate and maybe even have a go at creating your very own Easter eggs.

The ancient medieval city is known for its indulgent chocolate links – including the fact it’s the birthplace of Terry’s Chocolate Orange – and you’ll spot several wonderful shops selling the sweet stuff in the city centre. Make a beeline for York Chocolate Festival. Held as part of the York Food Festival from 27th to 31st March, it features a Chocolate Festival Market, Chocolate Festival Café Bar and a Chocolate Festival taste trail around the city, with 15 stops along the way.

Alternatively, York Cocoa House’s Easter egg and spring bunny chocolate workshop is ideal for little ones who want to have a go at making a cute chocolatey treat – simply use a mould to create a bunny featuring your choice of chocolate and extra flavourings. You’ll have the chance to craft a tasty egg-shaped chocolate bar too. The workshop is set to run from the 16th March to 14th April and will cost £22.50 per person.

  3. Or why not head to Liverpool for some adrenaline-fueled action?

  4. If you’ve not got a plan for Easter Saturday yet, we’re sure you’ll love our next Easter-inspired activity…

Journey to lively Liverpool by train and make your way to the Albert Docks for the Liverpool Indoor Funfair. Held at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool, the fair runs from 29th March to 7th April and features jaw-dropping rides – for children, big kids and the young at heart – and amazing attractions. Online tickets cost £9.99 which gives unlimited access to all the rides for three hours.

  5. Tuck into a tasty roast dinner in the Lake District

  6. Enjoying a roast dinner with all the trimmings is a brilliant way to bring all the family together on Easter Sunday. While you could dine at home, why not support a local business and enjoy a memorable day out in the lovely Lake District?

Penrith – the gateway to the Lakes – is brimming with brilliant restaurants where you can tuck into a slap-up Sunday roast. Enjoy a traditional roast at the historic George Hotel in the very centre of town or head to the North Lakes Hotel for a fancier three-course feast.

Elsewhere, the Thin White Duke in Carlisle is a safe bet for a first-rate roast dinner. And then there are the Lakes themselves where you’ll find no shortage of charming country inns – from the Lake View Garden Bar in Windermere to The King’s Head Inn near Thirlmere – for a hearty family meal.

If it’s a good weather day, consider setting off on a lovely spring walk before you dine. There are plenty of trails for all abilities across the region, from lakeside hikes to gentle strolls around some of the area’s most picture-perfect towns.

  7. Instead of chocolate, give your kids the gift of knowledge at Edinburgh Science Festival

  8. If you’ve got kids who are a little too old for Easter egg trails and the Easter bunny, never fear. There are lots of other things going in Edinburgh, including the fantastic Edinburgh Science Festival.

The festival runs from 30th March to the 14th of April and will feature plenty of workshops, talks and hands-on experiments at easy-to-reach locations across the city. You can gaze up at space through a huge telescope, learn how to code a dancing robot or go on a wild learning adventure at Edinburgh Zoo.

  9. Join one of the National Trust Easter Egg hunts in Glasgow

  10. An Easter egg hunt is easily one of the most thrilling activities for kids at this time of year! So, why not head to Glasgow and embark on one of the many hunts being organised by the National Trust for Scotland?

Venture to the Tenement House in Glasgow’s West End – just a 20-minute stroll from Glasgow Central station – where you’ll find a fun Easter egg trail for the whole family to enjoy.

The Easter Egg Trails will run between 29th March and 1st April at various locations around Glasgow and beyond. Tickets cost £4 and there’s no need to prebook.
