Comedy Connections with TransPennine Express: Susan Calman

It's that time again. Yes, we’re talking about the release of the third – and final – instalment in our Comedy Connections with TransPennine Express series. If you enjoyed a good old laugh at our previous interviews with Paddy McGuinness and Jim Moir, you’ll love our latest video which sees Vernon Kay interviewing Scottish comedian, Susan Calman, on one of our trains.

Glasgow-born Susan is well-known for her clever stand up and for presenting plenty of TV and radio shows, from the Great British Menu to The Lie. Watch our entertaining interview with her below.

If you’re keen to have a riotously good time in Glasgow, why not put the following fun activities on your itinerary?

1. Catch a show at The Stand Comedy Club
   
   Glasgow is no stranger to great comedy clubs, including this awesome option just a stone’s throw from Kelvingrove Park. It sits in the basement of an old school and has several sister venues in cities located across our network, including Edinburgh and Newcastle.
   
   
   
   The Stand Comedy Club in Glasgow hosts brilliant comedy shows throughout the week, with the line-up ranging from household names to amateurs who are just stepping out onto the city’s comedy circuit. Check out the Monday Night Improv sessions or book tickets for one of the club’s touring shows. Upcoming acts in 2022 include Steve Hall, Adam Rowe, Lou Sanders and Jonny Pelham.
   
   
2. Have dinner and a right old laugh at The Comedy Cabaret
   
   Another event that’s a staple of Glasgow’s comedy scene is The Comedy Cabaret. It takes place at the Rotunda Comedy Club next door to the city’s OVO Hydro arena and it’s hosted many famous names over the years, including the early stand up shows of Alan Carr, John Bishop and Kevin Bridges.
   
   
   
   The casual venue has regular shows on Friday and Saturday nights. Prepare to laugh your head off during performances by both well-known and up-and-coming comedians. You could even book dinner tickets and tuck into delicious mezze while you watch courtesy of the much-loved local Greek restaurant, Halloumi. Yummy food and laugh-out-loud comedy? We’re sold!
   
   
3. Giggle at the Glee Club
   
   Yet another five-star destination for comedy in the city, the Glee Club Glasgow sits on Renfrew Street just a short stroll from Glasgow Central station. It’s one of five Glee Clubs scattered around the UK, and it only opened its doors in 2019, making it one of Glasgow’s newest comedy venues.
   
   
   
   As well as touring shows from some of the biggest names in the industry, the Glasgow Glee Club’s line-up features award-winning stand up comedy shows every Friday and Saturday night. If that’s not enough, you’ll also be able to catch music, dance, burlesque and spoken word performances throughout the year too. 4. Get your (roller) skates on at Roller Stop
   
   So, this isn’t quite a comedy club, but you’ll still have plenty of fun if you decide to visit. The Roller Stop is Glasgow’s only roller rink and hosts roller discos six days a week. You can pull on some skates and whizz round the room to a soundtrack of singalong tunes.
   
   Roller Stop is a great place to visit with kids, although it also has several themed nights which are adults-only. Not very experienced? The venue’s friendly staff are always on hand to give you a quick roller-skating lesson. Skate sessions at Roller Stop last 90 minutes and you can hire gear when you arrive (or bring your own if you’re a regular skater).
