Tickets Explained

New simpler names for train fares have been introduced across the National Rail network so now you can choose your train ticket quickly and easily, getting the best value fare for your journey. The new names bring together commonly used Single and Return fares into three categories, making it easier for you to buy the best value train ticket for your journey.

  • Advance

Advance tickets are Single (one-way) train fares offering great value for money on many longer distance journeys. The majority of Advance Purchase tickets must be purchased before 18:00 at least one day prior to travel, however a limited number of tickets on some routes are available up to 15 minutes before departure. You can now buy train tickets for all TPE routes up to 24 weeks in advance, which is when they are at their cheapest. Advance Purchase tickets are subject to availability and terms & conditions apply – please see our website for full details.

Advance tickets are available for both Standard and First Class travel. Discounts for Railcard holders and children are available.

Due to the popularity and limited availability of these train tickets, please book early to avoid disappointment.

Advance Purchase Tickets are valid only for the train service for which they are booked. They are non refundable and can be changed subject to a fee.

  • Airport Advance

Airport Advance is a single fare ticket with the same terms and conditions as Advance tickets.

Although the ticket is train specific, as a special concession, customers with an Airport Advance ticket (with an origin of Manchester Airport OR Lpool Airport Bus), will be allowed, if your flight is delayed, to travel on the next available TransPennine Express service to your destination.

This concession is available for up to three hours after the departure time of your original service. This is only valid if the booked train was scheduled to depart more than one hour after the scheduled flight arrival.

If the next TPE service to your destination is timed to depart more than three hours after the original departure time you may use this service.

Customers wishing to take advantage of this concession must have their tickets endorsed at the station ticket office prior to boarding.

Should your flight be delayed, please ensure that you obtain documentation from your airline that this is the case.

  • Anytime

Fully flexible train tickets with no time restrictions on when you can travel.

You can buy Anytime tickets in advance or on the day of travel. Discounts for Railcard holders and children are available.

Anytime Single and Anytime Day tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 0429 in the early morning on the following day.

For Anytime Return tickets, the outward journey must be made within 5 days of the date shown on your train ticket and return journeys must be made within one calendar month.

Available for both Standard and First Class train travel.

  • Off Peak

Offering great savings, these cheaper train tickets are available for travelling at off-peak times during the week.

They can be purchased in advance or on the day of travel.

The travel restrictions will depend on the journey you are making and will be advised when you buy your ticket. Discounts for Railcard holders and children are available.

Off-Peak Single and Off-Peak Day train tickets must be used on the date shown on the ticket.

For Off-Peak Return train tickets, outward journeys must be made on the date shown on your ticket and return journeys must be made within one calendar month.

  • Season Ticket

Season Tickets are valid for travel on any day within the validity of the ticket.

They are available for seven days, one calendar month, and any period between one and twelve months.

A Season Ticket offers significant savings over buying the Anytime Day Return each day, and avoids having to queue repeatedly for your ticket.

Customers holding a valid one month or longer Season Ticket may make their normal daily journey in First Class at the weekend at no extra cost on TransPennine Express services.

(Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) season tickets, for example, MetroCards, do not qualify for the weekend first class upgrade).

For more information visit our Season Tickets page.

  • Children

Up to two children under five years of age may travel free of charge with an adult passenger holding a ticket or other authority to travel.

However, under five's who are travelling free may only occupy a seat which is not required by a passenger holding a ticket or appropriate authority to travel.

Children under 16 years of age are entitled to discounts on most tickets. If a discount is not available, it will be made clear to you when you buy your ticket.

  • Railcards

Save a whopping 1/3rd off your train travel with a Railcard. If you have a 16-25 Railcard you can now get 50% off TPE advance tickets when booking through here.
