The North East is one of nine regions of England. It is east of the Pennines, borders with Scotland and has a North Sea coastline. It centres on the River Tyne, with Newcastle on the north bank and Gateshead on the south bank.

The region has much to offer in terms of vibrant cities and towns including Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, Gateshead and Middlesbrough. When you step off the train in the North East, you’ll find a range of onward travel options. There’s the Metro in Newcastle, which will take you to the likes of Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle Airport. In Durham, the Cathedral Bus links the train station to the Cathedral and Castle and there are plenty of buses in Middlesbrough too. You’ll also find taxi ranks outside the main train stations.

Newcastle

Newcastle is an iconic city packed with charm, personality and friendly locals. Head down to the quayside to see seven bridges including the Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millenium Bridge. You’ll find fantastic art galleries, brilliant independent music venues and plenty of excitement at St. James’ Park – home to Newcastle United.

Durham

Durham has been described as a “perfect little city” and it’s easy to see why. There’s the famous Durham Cathedral and Castle, as well as the beautiful botanical gardens. Throw in its eclectic mix of shops, bars and restaurants and it’s the perfect place to spend some time in the North East.

Berwick

Berwick, also called Berwick-upon-Tweed, is a town in Northumberland that’s packed with history. You can walk along the Elizabethan town walls or head to the medieval castle that’s perched on the rocks overlooking the river. There’s the beach, golf courses and independent cafes, shops and restaurants.

Middlesborough

Middlesbrough is a vibrant town packed full of history and character. Whilst reminders of its industrial heritage are clear to see, Middlesbrough today offers fantastic shopping, great restaurants and loads to do. And as it’s at the centre of the Tees Valley, it’s the ideal place to get out and explore the countryside and coast.

Sunderland

Sunderland is a port city in the county of Tyne and Wear. It offers a great mix of city, countryside and the coast. In the city there are museums, music venues, theatres and green open spaces. And if you head towards the coast, you’ll find some award-winning beaches that are amongst the best in the country.
